We All Bleed Red

Welcome to the final day of the Truth & Magic Experience! We All Bleed Red is the final track on the EP, and if it’s OK with you, I’d like to talk about politics for a minute. I’m not trying to pick a fight…I just want to point out something a lot of people seem to miss.

Even if you don’t live in the USA, I’m sure you remember all the drama and anger leading up to the 2016 presidential election. It seemed like everybody was going crazy with hatred for then-candidate (now-President) Donald Trump. Many of his supporters were hating on the haters. He’s not my favorite president, but I kept seeing so much anger, hatred and manipulative crap filling up my social media feeds from both sides that I had enough and felt like I had to write something about it. That’s when this song was born.

Everyone’s entitled to their own political opinions; lots of folks would disagree with some of mine, but we used to be able to discuss things like this in a civil and respectful way. Those days seem to be over, because now the minute you post a difference of opinion on social media you get shamed, demonized and thrown in the wood chipper.

In my opinion, the real problem here isn’t a particular politician or a certain political party. The real problem is that we don’t treat each other like HUMAN BEINGS anymore. We may disagree on a lot of things (even very passionately), but beneath the surface “we all bleed red”. We have WAY more in common than we have in difference. We all have similar fears. We’ve all felt the pain of a broken heart. We all know what shame feels like. Beneath the surface of language, culture and skin color, are we really all that different? I don’t think so.

We may never agree on some things (and we don’t have to), but we can take the time to understand each other better. We can listen. We can empathize. We can reason with each other. We can disagree with respect. We can treat each other like people. The same thing applies to lots of other areas of life, including race, economics and religion. Of course, there are some things worth fighting for, but I think our human dignity should definitely be one of them. 🙂

It was a pretty tall order putting all of those thoughts into a 5-minute song, but hopefully I did it justice. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Serendipity

Thanks so much for joining me on this 5-day journey through my Truth & Magic EP…before we wrap things up I want to share one final song with you.

Back in 2016 I entered two of my songs in the Colorado Music Business Organization’s annual Songwriting Contest – and believe it or not – BOTH songs were chosen as winners! Serendipity was one of those award-winning songs.

This song is about how there are unexpected blessings all around us if we would only take the time to look for them. Most of us are too busy or too distracted to notice, so they pass right by. Sometimes even bad things that happen to us have an unexpected silver lining, and many times the only way to see it is to look for it. I know my cancer journey yielded tons of blessings in disguise, but if I would have chosen to wallow in self-pity or anger, I never would have noticed them.

We miss out on so many good things in life because we don’t pay attention; hopefully this simple little song will inspire some of us to slow down and smell the roses more often. 🙂

She doesn’t have a clue
When pleasant surprises fall out of the blue
They’re under every stone
They sneak up behind and embrace her when she’s all alone

Serendipity
Such a mystery
Time after time
When she opens her mind
Serendipity
Making history
Time after time
When she travels outside of the lines

She loves the gifts they bring
Like roses on Sundays and warmth in the spring
She cherishes every one
They light up her face the way daffodils glow in the sun

Serendipity
Such a mystery
Time after time
When she opens her mind
Serendipity
Making history
Time after time
When she travels outside of the lines

So easy to miss
When we’re searching for bliss
But we can’t manufacture it
You know we would fracture it
Millions of souls
Would give all of their gold
Just to have one more taste of it
So many wasted it
